দেবাশিষ রায়ঃ চলচ্চিত্রে প্রফেসর কুনাল বসুর জড়িত থাকা নিয়ে বলুন। তিনি তো পুরোটা জুড়ে দারুনভাবে লেগে ছিলেন।অপর্না সেনঃ সে সিনেমাটির সাথে প্রথম থেকেই যুক্ত ছিল। সে আমার আর আমার স্বামীরপরিচিত। আক্ষরিকভাবেই আমরা তিনজন টানা সিনেমা নিয়ে কাজ করেছিলাম।কুনালেরস্ত্রী সুস্মিতাও আমাদের সাথে ছিল। যখন চিত্রনাট্য লেখা হচ্ছিল তখনআমি কুনাল এবং আমার স্বামী কল্যানকে ইমেইল করে দিতাম। আমরা চারজনইচিত্রনাট্য লেখার সময় দারুন ভাবে একত্রিত ছিলাম, তবে কুনাল আর আমি ছিলামআরেকটু বেশি। ইমেইলের পাশাপাশি ওর সাথে আমার এস এম এস এ কথা হতো ফলেচিত্রনাট্য লেখার সময় আমি ওর অনেক ইনপুট পেয়েছি।দেবাশিষ রায়ঃ আমাদের পাঠকদের বলছি। প্রফেসর কল্যান রায় নিউজার্সিতে থাকেন। আচ্ছা,অন্তহীন সিনেমাটিতে তো তিনি আপনার স্বামী চরিত্রে অভিনয় করেছিলেন। নিজেরস্বামীর সাথে স্ত্রী হিসেবে অভিনয় করাটা নিশ্চয়ই দারুন উত্তেজনার ব্যপারছিল?অপর্না সেনঃ হুম। যদিও আমরা এখন আলাদা হয়ে গেছি তারপরও এখনও আমরা একে অন্যকে সময় দেই। সিনামাতেও এর ব্যত্যয় ঘটেনি।

What were the cinematic adjustments you had to make to maintain the narrative of this film?Aparna Sen: The challenge in front of me was that I wanted to make a film that would be reminiscent of a Japanese water-color in its minimalism and poignancy.Devasish Ray: Your male protagonist Snehamoy played brilliantly by Rahul Bose. His character is surreal - how convinced were you of the author's etching of this almost unbelievable character?Aparna Sen: [In the case of this film] One is not looking for everyday realism. The character is not surreal - the innocence of the story is improbable enough to be surreal. The character of Snehamoy is just of a very shy reclusive person - a quintessential little man living a humdrum life. He has this one very extraordinary element in his life - that is he marries a Japanese woman who he never met. The story is hilarious, absurd and charming, and that's the reason why I wanted to make [a film on] it.Devasish Ray: It's kind of a bizarre situation, isn't it ?Aparna Sen: I am a little bit bored now of this mundane everyday reality that we are constantly depicting [in films] middle class people - I am just tired of that now.Devasish Ray: Talking about casting of the film, in my opinion, Moushumi Chatterjee has made a stunning comeback. Was she your first choice?Aparna Sen: Actually I was considering other people before Moushumi came to me, and when she did, I dropped everybody else. I think my collaborator Sohag Sen asked me if I would like to consider Moushumi, and suddenly the role fell into place and I said "oh absolutely Moushumi is the right person."Devasish Ray: What was your experience in directing Chigusa Takaku?Aparna Sen: Well, she is naïve in English and for that reason I had to talk through an interpreter. But surely she has a great deal of sensitivity as an actor. I used to find when on earth I was telling her through the interpreter – Please tell her that this is what she is feeling, what she has to do, this is exact situation – she despite not knowing English used to state in Japanese “Hi” “Hi” meaning Yes, yes. Automatically her body language would begin to change. She is really an actress of exceptional sensitivity.Devasish Ray: Your film is going to be away others in United States through the initiative of Databazar Media Ventures. It is also well for the Bengali cinema for which we are struggling so hard. What are your thoughts on this?Aparna Sen: Well, I’m so happy because Bengali is he sixth highest-spoken language in the world. There are lots of Bengalis in the dominion of Bengal, both from India and Bangladesh and it would be simply great to reach out to them because you obviously want to share your thoughts. But the same impact did constitute a charm. There is no doubt that the purity of the concept is charming. In this day and age, when relationships are so fickle and do not last, I felt for an idea, which is so bizarre, the ideal cinematographic vehicle would be a classical form. That’s why, I never sought any stylistic devices or which would make it deliberately stylized. I wanted to use a pure classical form which would convey the absurd idea.Devasish Ray: What’s about Prof. Kunal Basu’s involvement in the film? He is involved in a superb way!Aparna Sen: He was involved right from the beginning because he is a very good friend of ours. He was in touch with me and my husband. Literally, three of us worked constantly and there was also Susmita, Kunal’s wife, because he would read out all the events. All four of us were readily involved. Again, as I was writing, I was emailing the same to him and my husband Kalyan constantly. All four of us were quite involved in the progress of the screenplay but both Kunal and I worked in addition too. We were also sending each other text messages along with emailing. So there were lots of inputs from him.Devasish Ray: For our viewers we need to inform that Prof. Kalyan Ray is placed in New Jersey. Bengali film “Jadi Ekdin”, directed by young and vigorous Bengali director Ringo Banerjee, is going to release this April. Databazaar Media Ventures (DMV), a media wing of US printer retailer Databazaar.com, has obtained the international distribution rights of “Jadi Ekdin” and will be releasing the film over 19000 retail stores of North America including Amazon, Blockbuster, Netflix and iTune.Swarup: What did inspire you to make “Jadi Ekdin”?Ringo:The entire concept of “Jadi Ekdin”, if truth be told, does emanate from our own experiences in conjunction with the reality of the contemporary corporate environment. I have found that often due to exceedingly demanding rendezvous there remains hardly any time for us, in spite of best wishes, to spend some moments with our flesh and blood. What is more,since we continue to neglect (even though unknowingly) the relationship disappears in due course and comes to a dead end without more ado. It is also found increasingly either the majority of us remains hesitant to go back to the initial stage and strive to reorganize everything once more or stays standstill. This, in good time, leads to egoism – that leaves no stone unturned to play a potent role and everything does end without notice, without any valid reason.If we do consider each and every relation as a problem, the same problem has a solution then. We have got to find out the best solution that has got already lost. For that reason perception, learning and feeling of the same problem have remained as the true inspiration.Swarup: Life is a magic? Does the movie say so?Ringo: Well, life is a magic – life, in essence, is a magician. What does a magician do? He does perform through 3 vital steps. At the first stage,the concerned magician illustrates some general happenings and does pledge to convert the same to some uncanny ones. I do or would like to term the same as Promise. The second stage revolves round the term –Turn. It is to realize the kind of things (which we did wish for) that has already lost.When on earth the magician makes the coin vanish, he is not applauded all at once. The audience does wait for the coin and starts to applaud only when the very coin comes to the fore again.The third state is Prestige. Without a doubt, magician’s prestige dwells in audience’s approval.Well,the same thing happens everywhere. Nevertheless, in the course of life,on account of several developments a number of promises vanish. We do lose each other and this does turn out to be end for the majority of people. But prestige does exist in the life of a person who can reorganize all and this endeavor gives birth to a new relation. This happens to be the best gospel for all and above all for those who has the competence to fall in love.It is also true that a distinguishable similarity does exist between love and magic. It is undeniable that life and magic are inseparable; life can’t be devoid of magic and viceversa , it’s like that.Swarup: The trailer does depict that the film is rooted in an urban concept.Who is your audience then? Does it belong to Calcutta or Rural Bengal or even beyond West Bengal?Ringo: Well, each and every film has its own expression and language too. Whatever it is, there can’t be any sagacious difference between urban state of mind or metro or even rural frame of mind.Personally,I grew up in Kalyani and am still rooted in the same area. My relatives are still living in Sodepur, Khardah and even remote areas. I, still,do not find myself as unacquainted with the same environment, even for once. Truly speaking, one person can’t change on the strength of dress or the area wherein he lives. The language in which I speak along with the ambiance remain the same and there is hardly any doubt in it.Well,the ideal question should be the preference of a person and also the films which he/she feels affection for. Can this film appeal to person habituated in common films infested with actions and other plots? It’s also true that we are slaves of habit. It has got to be stated that every person does prefer to perceive, take pleasure in simply the best(whatever it is). Take for instance, Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal or the magnificent edifice is enjoyed by all,irrespective of Indians or aliens, and the credit goes to the magnificence only. The situation is just the same with Rabindra Sangeet. If the content and presentation do attract one, the movie shall be appreciated without doubt. Swarup: Is this movie going to release outside of Bengal too?Ringo: Yes, the movie is going to release in North America too thanks to Databazaar.com and DMV. I do consider this as a decisive step in the realm of Bengali films.

ITunes এ প্রথম বাংলা সিনেমা : দ্বন্দ ইতিহাস তৈরী করল
লেখক: বিপ্লব পাল।অনেকেই ভাবছেন আই টিউনে বাংলা সিনেমা "দ্বন্দ" রেন্টে বা ডাউনলোড হিসাবে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে-এই ঘটনাকে কেন আমি ঐতিহাসিক বলছি? টরেন্ট সহ নানান ডাউনলোড সাইটে অমন শত শত বাংলা সিনেমা বেআইনি ভাবে ডাউনলোড করা যায়!এতে নতুনত্বটা কি?এটা বুঝতে আমাকে ভিডীও প্রযুক্তির অগ্রগতি এবং তার পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে আই টিউন সাইটের মালিক আপলকে নিয়ে কিছু লিখতে হয়। আই ফোন বা আই পডের দৌলতে আপনার সবাই আপল কোম্পানীর নাম অবশ্যই শুনেছেন। আপল পৃথিবীর সর্ববৃহৎ উদ্ভাবক কোম্পানী হিসাবে গত তিন বছর ধরে প্রথম স্থানে। এরাই প্রথম হাই ডেফিনিশন ভিডিওর জনক-যা তাদের H-264 কোডেকের মাধ্যমে পৃথিবীর বুকে জন্ম নিয়েছিল আজ থেকে ছয় বছর আগে। কোডেক হচ্ছে কিছু গণিতিক এলগোরিদম যা দিয়ে ভিডীও ফাইলকে কম্প্রেস করে ছোট করা হয়। যেমন ধরুন একটা ১ঘন্টার সিনেমা হাই ডেফিনিশনে শুটিং করলে, তার ফাইল সাইজ দাঁড়াবে ১২ টেরাবাইটের ওপরে ( এক টেরাবাইট মানে ১০০০ গিগাবাইট)। ৩৫ মিলিমিটারের ফিল্ম থেকে ডিজিটাল মাস্টার ( ডিজি বিটা) বানালে, সেটার সাইজ হয় ১০০ গিগাবাইট। এবার সেটা দিয়ে না ডিভিডি হবে, না কেও ডাউনলোড করতে পারবে। কারন ডিভিডি তে ২-৮ গিগাবাইট আঁটে। ফলে অনেক গণিত কষে সেই ফাইলকে ছোট করে দেওয়া হয়, যাতে ভিডিওর রং, বা মোশন বা রিজল্যুশনের ক্ষতি না হয়। সেই গণিতকে বলে ভিডিও কোডেক-যার কোডেক যত উন্নত তার ভিডিও কোয়ালিটি তত উন্নত।আই টিউন সাইট থেকে ভিডিও দেখার সাথে অন্য ডাউনলোড বা ডিভিডির পার্থক্য কোথায়?প্রথমে ডিভিডির কথাতে আসি। ভিসিডি কোডেক কোয়ালিটি হচ্ছে MPEG1 । ডিভিডিতে যে কোডেক চলে তা MPEG2। আর আই টিউন তৈরী হয় H-264 নামে এপেলের কোডেক দিয়ে যা MPEG4 or MP4-অর্থাৎ তা ডিভিডি থেকে অনেকগুন উন্নত। ডিভিডির একটা বড় সমস্যা হচ্ছে, এগুলো 8-bit encrypted. সেখানে আই টিউনে ৩২ bit বা 64 bit encrypted কোডেক চলে-ফলে ভিডিওর রঙ এবং মোশন অনেক উন্নত। তবে বাংলা সিনেমার ডিজিটাল মাস্টার অত ভাল হয় না-তবুও এই দ্বন্দ সিনেমারই ডিভিডি এবং আই টিউন ফাইলের কোয়ালিটির মধ্যে অনেক পার্থক্য। আই টিউনের ভিডিও দেখে আপনার অনেক বেশী ভাল লাগবে। সেই অর্থে দ্বন্দই হল প্রথম বাংলা সিনেমা যা আপনারা MPEG4 এ দেখতে পাবেন।আর বে আইনি ডাইনলোড কোয়ালিটি? আমার কিছু বলার নেই। এগুলো ডিভিডি রিপ করে সস্তার WMV-9 কোডেকে করা ভিডিও। এমনিতে ডিভিডি কোয়ালিটিই আহামরি কিছু না-আবার সেটাকে ভেঙে WMV-9 এর মতন মাইক্রোসফটের পুরানো কোডেকের ভিডিও খুবই নিম্নমানের। খারাপ কোয়ালিটির ভিডিও আমাকে বিনা পয়সাতে কেও দেখালেও আমি দেখব না। কারন সেটা আমার কাছে অত্যাচার। তাছারা আই টিউন সাইটে পয়সা দিয়ে বাংলা সিনেমা দেখলে, সেই টাকার ৭০% বাংলা সিনেমা শিল্পে যাবে। যা বাংলার সংস্কৃতিকে উন্নত করবে।আমি যেটা লিখলাম-সেটা শুধু পড়ে বুঝতে পারবেন না। আপল সাইট থেকে দ্বন্দ রেন্ট করে দেখুন (এখানে ক্লিক করুন)। তাহলেই পার্থক্যটা খুব ভাল করে বুঝতে পারবেন।ডেটাবাজারের কর্নাধারন অনি শীল যখন আমাকে ইমেল করে জানালেন, দ্বন্দ আইটিউনে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে-আমি সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আমার আই টিউন একাউন্ট থেকে দ্বন্দ রেন্ট করে নিলাম। বাংলা সিনেমার জন্যে উনি যা করে দিয়ে গেলেন, ইতিহাসই তার উত্তর দেবে। কারন সমগ্র বিশ্বের সিনেমা এখন আই টিউনে পাওয়া যায়। বাংলা সিনেমাকে আন্তর্জাতিক হতে গেলে আই টিউনে আসতেই হত। ডেটাবাজার মিডিয়া ভেঞ্চারের মাধ্যমে উনি যুগান্তকারী সেই পথটা খুলে দিয়ে গেলেন। তবে বাংলা সিনেমাকে আরো উন্নত করতে হবে। বাংলা সিনেমার ক্যামেরা, সাউন্ড ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং, পোষ্টপ্রোডাকশন এখনো বেশ নিম্নমানের।হয়ত আই টিউনে বাংলা সিনেমাটা যাবে, সেই চাপেই বাংলা সিনেমা এবার উন্নত প্রযুক্তির আঁচল ধরবে।

রিঙ্গোঃ বর্তমানে মানুষ বিভিন্ন কর্পোরেট সেক্টরে কাজ করার জন্য ভীষণ ব্যস্ত জীবন যাপন করে। ফলে আমাদের সম্পর্ক গুলোকে আমরা সময় দিয়ে উঠতে পারি না। যার জন্য আমাদের সম্পর্ক গুলো একটা শেষের দিকে এগিয়ে যায়। একটা ছেলে বা মেয়ের মধ্যে একটা ইগো থাকে যার ফলে সম্পর্কটা ভালো থাকতে থাকতে হঠাৎ সম্পর্কটাকে শেষ পর্যায়ে নিয়ে যায়। সেই জায়গা থেকে এই সমস্যাটাকে দেখে, শিখে বা পরিস্থিতিটাকে অনুভব করে এই সমস্যাটাকে সমাধান করার একটা চেষ্টা করা। সম্পর্ক পুনরায় আগের মত সুন্দর করে সাজিয়ে তৈরী করার একটা অনুপ্রেরণা হতে পারে এই ছবিটা।
স্বরুপঃ জীবন একটা ম্যাজিক বলতে আপনি কী বলতে চেয়েছেন?
রিঙ্গোঃ আমি বলতে চাই মানুষের জীবন জিনিসটাই একটা ম্যাজিক। ম্যাজিশিয়ানদের তিনটে ধাপ আছে। ম্যাজিশিয়ান যেমন প্রমিস করে যে একটা সাধারণ জিনিসকে অসাধারণ করে তোলে। এটা তার প্রমিস। দ্বিতীয় ধাপ হল টার্ন। মানুষকে জীবনে অনেক আঁকাবাঁকা পথ অতিক্রম করে এগোতে হয়। অনেক কঠিন পরিস্থিতিতে টার্ন নিতে হয়। আমরা জীবনে অনেক ছোট ছোট প্রমিস করে থাকি। ম্যাজিশিয়ান যেমন একটা পয়সা নিয়ে ভ্যানিশ করে দেয়। দর্শকরা অপেক্ষা করে কখন তিনি সেই পয়সাটাকে আবার ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে আসেন। সেটা দেখে দর্শকরা হাততালি দেয়। বলে বা কি দারুণ। এটা হল তৃতীয় ধাপ প্রেস্টিজ। দর্শকরা হাততালি দিল আর বললো বা কী দারুণ এটা ম্যাজিশিয়ানদের কাছে তার কাজের জন্য প্রাপ্য সন্মান। মানুষের জীবন আর ম্যাজিকের মধ্যে একটা সুন্দর মিল আছে। জীবন ছাড়া ম্যাজিক হয় না বা ম্যাজিক ছাড়া জীবন হয় না। মানুষ তার জীবন, তার ফ্যামিলির বিভিন্ন সমস্যা গুলকে খুঁজে বের করে সমাধানের চেষ্টা করে এটা হল প্রমিস। সেই সমস্যাটাকে আগের মত সুন্দর করে সাজিয়ে তোলাটা হল টার্ন। সবকিছু যখন আবার ঠিক হয় সেটা প্রেস্টিজ।
স্বরুপঃ আপনার ছবির ট্রেলার দেখে বোঝা গেল এটা আর্বান থিম। তাই জানতে চাই আপনার ছবির দর্শক কারা-কলকাতায়, গ্রামবাংলায় না পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাইরে?
রিঙ্গোঃ প্রত্যেক ছবিরই একটা ভাষা আছে। আমি বুঝি না আর্বান, মেট্রো বা মফঃস্বল বলে আমি কিছু বুঝিনা, এর মানেটা কী? আমি কল্যাণীতে বড় হয়েছি।আমার ছোটবেলা কল্যাণীতে কেটেছে। এখনআমি শহরে থাকি। তা বলে এই নয় যে আমার শেকড় বাকড় সব আমার কাছে অচেনা হয়ে গেছে। আমার পিসির বাড়ী সোদপুর খড়দার একটা রিমোট যায়গাতে। আমি এখনো যাই কল্যাণীতে। সেখানে গিয়ে আমার মিল খুঁজে পাই। মানুষের দেশ বা আবেশ বদলে গেলে মানুষ বদলে যায় বলে আমি মনে করি না। আমিমনে করি আমি যে ভাষায় কথা বলি সেই ভাষাটা এক বা আমি যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে কথা বলি সেই জায়গাটা এক।
আমি মনে করি কোন দর্শক কোন ধরনের ছবি পছন্দ করে। যারা একটু মারা মারির ছবি বা যারা দক্ষিণ ভারতীয় ছবি পছন্দ করে তারা কী ছবিটা পছন্দ করবে? কারণ আমরা অভ্যাসের দাস। আমরা যেটা দেখে দেখে অভ্যস্ত সেটা দেখতেই বেশী পছন্দ করি। ফলে সেটা দেখেই অভ্যস্ত হয়ে যাই। ফলে নতূন ছবি দেখার জন্য আমরা আমাদের গণ্ডি টা পেরোতে পারবো না এটা ভাবা ভূল। সুতরাং বাংলা ছবি শুধু কলকাতাতেই চলবে এটা ঠিক নয়। তাজমহল আমরাও দেখি আবার বিদেশীরাও দেখেন। তাজমহটা ভালো বলেই সবারই ভাল লাগে। রবীন্দ্র সঙ্গীত আমরাও শুনি আবার বিদেশেও শোনে। এ আর রহমানের মিউজিক সবাই শোনে। যারা বাংলা ভাষা বোঝেন বা যারা বাংলা সিনেমাকে ভালবাসেন তারা অবশ্যই ছবিটা দেখবেন বলে আমি আশা রাখি।
স্বরুপঃ আপনার এই বাংলা ছবি কী বাংলা ছাড়া বাংলার বাইরে পা রাখছে?

The Japanese Wife - A brief synopsisThis is a haunting but improbable love story involving three shy people: Snehamoy Chatterjee, an Arithmetic teacher in a school in the interiors of riverine West Bengal; Miyage the Japanese girl who became his wife through a strange sequence of letters, and Sandhya, a widow forced by circumstances to take refuge in his home. It had all begun when Snehamoy was a student in Serampore College, living in a hostel and preparing for his BSc examination. Too shy to make friends with his rowdy classmates, he had sent off a letter to a name found in a magazine under ‘pen friends’. The answer had arrived a month later resulting in an abiding friendship between two people who did not know each other’s tongues and were forced to communicate with the aid of dictionaries in a foreign language – English – often with hilarious results.It would probably have continued in this vein if it hadn’t been for Snehamoy’s aunt’s God-daughter Sandhya. Sandhya is brought to their house because Mashi, the widowed aunt who had brought Snehamoy up, is trying to find a prospective bride for her nephew. When Snehamoy writes to Miyage about her as he does about every important and unimportant event, a letter arrives that changes the course of his life.In the letter Miyage has offered herself to him as his bride. Sandhya comes back as a widow with an eight year-old son in tow, and no one to turn to after her mother’s death except Snehamoy’s Mashi – her God-mother. Even though Sandhya never crosses his path, she takes up the reins of the household in her own unobtrusive way. Snehamoy’s room which had always been a mess of papers, unmade bed, discarded clothes and over-spilling ashtrays, is now tidy and fresh-smelling when he returns from school with his clothes folded neatly on the clotheshorse.With Sandhya Snehamoy discovers a bond of domesticity as they gradually start sharing household chores. With her son Paltu he discovers the joys of fatherhood. Paltu becomes his pet and together they organize a fantastic kite fight in their village between the Japanese kites sent by Miyage and their locally made rivals. Yet Snehamoy remains Miyage’s devoted husband at heart. When Miyage falls sick and has to leave her home to live with her brother, Snehamoy is frantic with worry. He would have flown to Japan had he the money to do so. As it is, he takes six months’ leave (without pay!) from his school and spends agonizing days consulting a range of doctors with his wife’s symptoms. His proximity with Sandhya grows as well, as he becomes aware of her tragedy – living the lonely life of a widow. The shy school teacher is caught between the pull of his marriage – a long standing intimacy devoid of domesticity -- and another undefined relationship that offers a comforting domesticity without any possibility of intimacy – thus becoming an unwitting partner to two solitary women. As days pass by and Miyage’s health worsens, it becomes clear that Snehamoy will need to visit an oncologist in Calcutta to get a proper assessment of his wife’s condition. A storm strikes as he makes his way over to the city and he returns disheartened and severely drenched. He tries to call Miyage on a local phone but a poor connection comes in the way of a proper conversation. He falls sick with pneumonia and the flooding makes it impossible for him to receive proper treatment. The fever rages while their village remains marooned in the grip of a tormented Bay of Bengal. The local homeopath prescribes sweet white pills that neither bring down the temperature nor ease the labored breathing. Sandhya sits by his bedside pressing cold compresses on his forehead and massaging hot oil into his chest while his aunt prays fervently at the family shrine and the boy flits nervously in and out of the room. The postman had come knocking once the ferry service was able to bring in the mail, but Miyage’s letter, which the boy had pressed into the patient’s hand, remains unopened. Snehamoy’s fevered brain imagines his wife’s letter: I am right there beside you Snehamoy…can you not feel my hand on your forehead…? Far from his wife and desperately worried over her health, Snehamoy’s life hangs by the thread as he is tended by Sandhya, just as any beloved husband would be by a loving wife. Will the widow find her solace with Snehamoy? Or, just as in their letters, will life finally unite Snehamoy and Miyage as husband and wife?

আপনার তুলনামূলক অভিজ্ঞতাটা কেমন?সম্রাট: প্রথমেই বলতে চাই ছোটবেলা থেকেই যাদের ছবি দেখে এসেছি, যারা আমাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে তাদের সাথে কাজ করতে পারায় আমি নিজেকে সম্মানিত ও ভাগ্যবান মনে করি। আমি বড় হয়েছি অ্যামেরিকার ম্যাসাচুসেটস এর বস্টনে। বাবা-মা কে অনেক ধন্যবাদ যে তারা আমাকে ছোটবেলায়ই বাংলা সংস্কৃতির সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন। ৮ বছর বয়সেই রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের গান ও কবিতার সাথে আমার খুব ভাল পরিচয় হয়ে গিয়েছিল। এমনকি সত্যজিৎ রায়ের সিনেমার সাথেও সেই সূত্রে পরিচয়। তবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ছেলেপেলে বড় হয় টেলিভিশনে ককেশিয়ান অভিনেতাদের দেখতে দেখতে, ই.টি. এবং স্টার ওয়ারস এর মত সিনেমার সাথে পরিচয় ঘটে- আমার ক্ষেত্রেও এর ব্যতিক্রম ঘটেনি। একদিন আমার মা অমিতাভ বচ্চনের 'নমক হালাল' নামে একটা সিনেমা ভাড়া করে নিয়ে আসে। এটাই আমার দেখা প্রথম বচ্চন সিনেমা এবং এটা দেখেই আমার মধ্যে বড় ধরণের পরিবর্তন এসেছিল। তরুণ অমিতাভ বচ্চন, বড় পর্দায় এতো সুন্দর সুন্দর গান, সেই প্রথম বড় পর্দায় এমন শক্তিশালী কোন ভারতীয় চরিত্র দেখা। সেটা ছিল বিস্ময়কর, আমাকে আরও ভারতীয় সিনেমা দেখতে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিল। পরবর্তীতে অনেক ভারতীয় সিনেমা দেখেছি, যেমন সত্যজিৎ রায়ের অপু ত্রয়ী। এভাবেই আমার মাঝে সিনেমার অভিনেতা হওয়ার ইচ্ছা জেগে উঠে।ক্যারিয়ারের এই পর্যায়ে আমি স্পাইক লি-র মত পরিচালকদের সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি যিনি "ডু দ্য রাইট থিং" এর মত বিখ্যাত সিনেমা করেছেন। এটা আসলেই খুব বিস্ময়কর এবং অনেকটা একই রকম। ইন্ডাস্ট্রির কথা আসলে আপনি হয়তো বলিউড, টলিউড বা হলিউড বলবেন, কিন্তু আমি বরং বলিউডকে ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি এবং টলিউডকে বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি নামে ডাকব কারণ এগুলো ইনডাস্ট্রি হতে চায় ব্যাপারটা এমন না, এরা সবাই স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ ইন্ডাস্ট্রি। বলিউড তথা ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি তো অনেকদিন ধরে সিনেমা বানিয়ে আসছে। এমনকি এটা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি। অনেকদিন থেকেই এটা সর্ববৃহৎ ছিল কিন্তু সম্প্রতি আন্তর্জাতিক দর্শকদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে পারছে।তবে আমি আবারও বলছি, ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি, বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি এবং হলিউড অনেকটা একই রকম। আমি যেমন স্পাইক লি-র সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি যা আমার জন্য খুবই গর্বের বিষয়, তার করা "শি হেইট মি" সিনেমায় কাজ করেছি। তেমনি আবার অমিতাভ বচ্চনের সাথে কাজ করে ধন্য হয়েছি। বচ্চন ইয়াশ রাজ ফিল্মস এর ব্যানারে সিলসিলা করেছিলেন। সম্প্রতি ইয়াশ রাজ এর ব্যানারে হওয়া নিউ ইয়র্ক সিনেমায় আমি তার সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি। এটি আমার জন্য এক বিশাল উপহার ছিল এবং এর অংশ হতে পেরে আমি নিজেকে খুব ভাগ্যবান মনে করছি। আবার সম্প্রতি টলিউড তথা বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি তে কাজ করাটাও অন্যরকম অভিজ্ঞতা দিয়েছে। অনেক বছর ধরেই আমি সৌমিত্র চ্যাটার্জির গুণমুগ্ধ, 'অপুর সংসার' দেখার পর থেকেই। দ্বন্দ্ব সিনেমায় তিনি আছেন, বং কানেকশনেও ছিলেন।কিন্তু দ্বন্দ্বের অভিজ্ঞতা খুব মনে পড়ছে। এমনকি সিনেমাটা ডাব করার সময় আমি সৌমিত্র্য চ্যাটার্জির সাথেই ছিলাম ডাবিং রুমে। আসলে আমি ডাবিং রুম থেকে বের হচ্ছিলাম আর তিনি ঢুকছিলেন। সে ছিল আমার জন্য খুব স্মরণীয় একটা মুহূর্ত। আমাদের মধ্যে কিছুক্ষণ আলাপ হয়েছিল, তিনি সত্যজিৎ রায়ের 'অরণ্যের দিনরাত্রি' সিনেমার সেটে ঘটা কিছু মজার অভিজ্ঞতা বলেছিলেন আমায়।এই কাজগুলো করতে পারায় নিজেকে খুব ভাগ্যবান মনে হচ্ছে। তাছাড়া আমার অভিনয় ক্যারিয়ার আমাকে ভারত পুনরাবিষ্কারে সাহায্য করেছে, আমার বাবা-মা যেদেশ থেকে এসেছেন সেই দেশ পুনরাবিষ্কারে। আমি মেট্রো বা বাসে করে ঘুরতে পারছি এই দেশেরই একটি শহরে, সত্যজিৎ রায় যে স্থানগুলোতে শুটিং করেছিলেন সেগুলো নিজ চোখে দেখতে পারছি। আমার পূর্বপুরুষদের ভূমিতে ঘুরে ফিরতে পারছি। তাই এই তিনটি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রিতে কাজ করতে পেরেই আমি ধন্য। এবং সত্যি বলতে এই তিনটা ইন্ডাস্ট্রিই একই মৌলিক ভিত্তির উপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, যাদের গুণমুগ্ধ ছিলাম তাদের সাথে কাজ করতে গিয়ে আমাকে যে পথ ধরে এগুতে হয়েছে সবখানেই তা একই ছিল। এবং সকল ক্ষেত্রেই যাত্রাগুলো ছিল চমকপ্রদ।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা, এবার দ্বন্দ্বে ফিরে আসি। এখানে আপনার চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে বিবাহবহির্ভূত প্রেম এর সম্পর্ক ফুটিয়ে তুলতে হয়েছে। আপনার এই চরিত্রায়ন কি প্রাকৃতিকভাবেই এসেছে, নাকি নিজের মত করে নতুনভাবে চরিত্রটি তৈরি করেছেন?সম্রাট: (হাসি) আপনি জানেন যে অভিনেতা হিসেবে আমার দায়িত্ব হচ্ছে একটা গল্প সৎ, বিশ্বাসযোগ্য এবং আকর্ষণীয়ভাবে উপস্থাপন করা। আমি অনেক ধরণের চরিত্রে অভিনয় করেছি- ইন্টারোগেটর, প্রেমিক; আর অভিনেতা হিসেবে আমাদের দায়িত্বের একটা বড় অংশ হচ্ছে নিজের আইডিয়া চরিত্রের মধ্যে নিয়ে আসা, নিজেদের মত করে কিছু পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করা। কিন্তু একই সাথে এটা কল্পনা, সৃজনশীলতা এবং পারষ্পরিক সহযোগিতার অংশ যার সাহায্যে চরিত্রটা তৈরি হয়।বিপ্লব: চরিত্র রূপায়নে নিজের সৃজনশীলতা কাজে লাগানোর ক্ষেত্রে আপনি পরিচালক সুমনের কাছ থেকে কতটুকু স্বাধীনতা পেয়েছেন?সম্রাট: চরিত্রের মধ্যে নিজে থেকে কিছু যোগ করা, কিছু সৃষ্টি করা বা ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে অভিজ্ঞতাকে কাজে লাগানোর সুযোগ সুমন আমাকে দিয়েছে। আমাকে নিজের মত করে কিছু যোগ করতে দেয়ার ক্ষেত্রে সুমনের সুস্পষ্ট দূরদৃষ্টি এবং উদারতা ছিল বিস্ময়কর। আমি মাঝেমধ্যেই কোন একটা লাইন বা কোন একটা মুহূর্ত নিয়ে তাকে প্রশ্ন করতাম, সে উত্তর দিত ঠিকই কিন্তু আবার বলত যেন আমি নিজে নিজে বিষয়টা ভেবে দেখি, নিজের মত করে। সে আসলে সত্যিকার অর্থেই এমন একটা পরিবেশ তৈরি করেছিল যাতে কাজটা স্বচ্ছন্দে এগিয়ে যেতে পারে। তার সাথে কাজ করে খুব ভাল লেগেছে, অনেক স্বাধীনতা পেয়েছি; এমন দূরদৃষ্টিসম্পন্ন একজন পরিচালকের সাথে কাজ করতে পারা এবং সুন্দরী অনন্যা চ্যাটার্জির প্রেমিক চরিত্রে অভিনয় করা, সত্যিই অনেক বড় ব্যাপার।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা এবার অনন্যা চ্যাটার্জির প্রসঙ্গে আসি। তার সাথে কাজ করে কেমন লেগেছে? আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ডে আপনি তাকে কিভাবে মূল্যায়ন করবেন?সম্রাট: আমি মনে করি অনন্যা খুব শক্তিশালী এবং স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত একজন অভিনেত্রী। এখানে থেকে সে অনেক ভাল কাজ করতে পারবে। তার সাথে কাজ করে খুব ভাল লেগেছে এবং একই সাথে খুব মজাও পেয়েছি। কারণ সে খুব বিনয়ী, একইসাথে আবার খুব শক্তিশালী। চোখ দেখেই তার গভীর ব্যক্তিত্বের পরিচয় পাওয়া যায়। সে খুব স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত, স্বভাবসিদ্ধ অভিনেত্রীদের মতোই অভিনয় করতে তার খুব একটা শ্রম দিতে হয় না। স্বাধীন, আন্তর্জাতিক বা হলিউড সিনেমায় আমি অনেকের সাথেই অভিনয় করেছি। যেমন 'কিসিং কাজিনস' এ ব্রিটিশ অভিনেত্রী রেবেকা হেজলউড এর সাথে কাজ করেছি। এলিজাবেথ রিজার হলিউড সিনেমা ও টেলিভিশন ফিল্মের প্রতিষ্ঠিত অভিনেত্রী, 'দ্য ওয়েডিং উইকএন্ড' সে আমার কো-স্টার ছিল। সত্যি বলতে অনন্যা তাদের একেবারে সমমানের, মেধা এবং পেশাদারিত্ব সকল দিক দিয়েই।বিপ্লব: তা জেনে ভাল লাগল। কিন্তু একজন দক্ষিণ এশীয় হিসেবে হলিউডে কাজ করতে গিয়ে কি আপনার কোন অসুবিধা হয় না? কারণ আমার অভিজ্ঞতা বলে, ককেশিয়ান না হলে হলিউডে অভিনেতা হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়া খুব কষ্টকর। সুতরাং আপনি কি মনে করেন, বলিউড এবং এখন টলিউড যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে দক্ষিণ এশীয় অভিনেতাদের জন্য নতুন সুযোগ করে দিচ্ছে?সম্রাট: হ্যা, আমি মনে করি এটা ধীর প্রক্রিয়া, কিন্তু আমরা এগিয়ে যাচ্ছি। ভারতীয় ও বাংলা ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে দক্ষিণ এশীয় অভিনেতাদের জন্য নতুন দুয়ার খুলে দিচ্ছে। এবং আমি মনে করি দ্বন্দ্বের একই সাথে অ্যামাজন, নেটফ্লিক্স এবং ব্লকবাস্টারের মত সবগুলো চ্যানেলে একই দিনে মুক্তি পাওয়া একটি ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনা। এগিয়ে যেতে হলে এ ধরণের কাজ আরও করতে হবে।অ্যামেরিকায় আমি স্নাতক পর্যায় পর্যন্ত পড়াশোনা করেছি। শিক্ষকরা আমাকে অভিনয় করতে উৎসাহিত করে বলেছেন, ককেশিয়ান না হলেও কোন অসুবিধা নেই, অ্যামেরিকায় আন্তর্জাতিক পরিবেশ রয়েছে। তারপরও স্পষ্ট করে বলতে গেলে বলতে হয় ককেশিয়ান না হয়ে হলিউডে নাম করা বেশ কষ্টকর। প্রখ্যাত আফ্রিকান-অ্যামেরিকান অভিনেতা সিডনি পোয়াটিয়ে আজ থেকে ৫৫ বছর আগে অস্কার পেয়েছিলেন। তখন থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত আর কতজন আফ্রিকান-অ্যামেরিকান সেরা অভিনেতা হিসেবে অস্কার পেয়েছেন? যথেষ্ট নয়। আমি আশাকরি এই ইন্টারনেট সমাজে সবকিছুর গতি যেহেতু আগের চেয়ে বেশি সেহেতু ভারতীয়দের তেমন অবস্থায় আসতে আরও কম সময় লাগবে। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যজনক হলেও সত্যি যে আমরা বেশ ধীর গতিতে আগাচ্ছি। আসলে আমাদেরকে আরও সংঘটিত হতে হবে, নিজেদের সম্প্রদায়কে আরও সমর্থন জোগাতে হবে। বৈশ্বিক বাজারে উন্নতি করার একটাই উপায় আছে, পাইরেসি-র মত কাজগুলো পুরোপুরি বন্ধ করা। এটা আমি আরও একবার বলতে চাই। ডিভিডি-র ক্ষেত্রে আমাদেরকে অবশ্যই পাইরেসি বন্ধ করতে হবে।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ডে বাংলা সিনেমাকে আপনি কিভাবে মূল্যায়ন করেন এবং বাংলা সিনেমাকে বৈশ্বিক স্কেলে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য আপনার পরামর্শ কী?সম্রাট: একেবারে প্রথম থেকে শুরু করা যাক। সত্যজিৎ রায়ের সময়টাতে বাংলা সিনেমা যে শুধু আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ড বজায় রেখেছে তাই নয় অনেক ক্ষেত্রে তাকে ছাড়িয়েও গেছে। এমনকি রায়ের "অপু ত্রয়ী" সেই সময়ই সব আন্তর্জাতিক চলচ্চিত্র উৎসবে পুরস্কার জিতেছে। আমি মনে করি, বর্তমানে তেমন পর্যায়ে পৌঁছানোর উপকরণ সবই আছে। কিন্তু আসল বিষয় হচ্ছে গল্প এবং নির্মাণ কৌশলের দিক দিয়ে উঁচু মান বজায় রাখা এবং সেটা ভালভাবে প্রকাশ করা।সুমন ঘোষের 'দ্বন্দ্ব'-এ নির্মাণ এর মান এবং গল্প খুবই সুন্দর। এতে রয়েছে বরুন মুখার্জির চমৎকার চিত্রগ্রহণ এবং ময়ূখ ভৌমিকের অনন্যসাধারণ সঙ্গীত যার সবই আন্তর্জাতিক মানের। তাই বলা যায় বাংলা সিনেমা আন্তর্জাতিক মানে পৌঁছানোর মত অবস্থায়ই রয়েছে, এখন কেবল দরকার চলচ্চিত্র সম্প্রদায়টিকে সমর্থন জোগানো। এবং আবারও বলছি, সেটা পাইরেসির মাধ্যমে নয়, সঠিক চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে করতে হবে।বৈশ্বিক ভারতীয় হিসেবে আমাদেরকে কম দামে পাইরেটেড ডিভিডি কেনা বা ভাড়া করা বন্ধ করতে হবে। কেউ যদি ডিভিডির মূল কপি না কিনে পাইরেটেড কপি কিনে তাহলে নির্মাতা অর্থ হারায়। আর যথেষ্ট আয় করতে না পারলে নির্মাতারা নতুন মানসম্পন্ন সিনেমা বানাতে পারেন না।বিপ্লব: আমি মনে করি বর্তমানে পাইরেসির চেয়ে ভয়ংকর জিনিস হচ্ছে টরেন্ট। কারণ বিট টরেন্টের মাধ্যমে অন্য কম্পিউটার থেকে খুব সহজেই যেকোন কিছু পাওয়া যায়।সম্রাট: ঠিক তাই। সুতরাং আমি মনে করি যদি আমরা সুমন ঘোষ, ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষ, অপর্ণা সেন এর মত চলচ্চিত্রকারদের সিনেমার মূল কপি কে সাপোর্ট করি তাহলে বাংলা বা ভারতীয় সিনেমা বৈশ্বিক মার্কেটে আরও এগিয়ে যেতে পারবে।বিপ্লব: আমার শেষ প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, আপনার ক্যারিয়ার পরিকল্পনা কী?সম্রাট: আমার ক্যারিয়ার পরিকল্পনা খুবই সরল। আমি অভিনেতা হিসেবে সিনেমার মাধ্যমে গল্প বলে যেতে চাই, বিশেষ করে এমন সব গল্প বলতে চাই যার সাথে বর্তমান সমাজের সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। তা সে হলিউড, ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি বা বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি যেখানেই হোক না কেন। আমার কাছে সিনেমা একটি সর্বজনীন ভাষা। এটা বাংলা বা হিন্দি বা এমনকি ইংরেজিরও উর্ধ্বে। একটি নির্বাক চলচ্চিত্রের মাধ্যমেও সবকিছু প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব। আমি অভিনেতা হিসেবে এভাবে গল্প বলে যেতে চাই তা সে এলএ, নিউ ইয়র্ক, বোম্বে বা কলকাতা যেখানেই হোক। রেডিও লিংকঃhttp://www.vnnbangla.com/newsreader.aspx?id=2568

আপনার তুলনামূলক অভিজ্ঞতাটা কেমন?সম্রাট: প্রথমেই বলতে চাই ছোটবেলা থেকেই যাদের ছবি দেখে এসেছি, যারা আমাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে তাদের সাথে কাজ করতে পারায় আমি নিজেকে সম্মানিত ও ভাগ্যবান মনে করি। আমি বড় হয়েছি অ্যামেরিকার ম্যাসাচুসেটস এর বস্টনে। বাবা-মা কে অনেক ধন্যবাদ যে তারা আমাকে ছোটবেলায়ই বাংলা সংস্কৃতির সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন। ৮ বছর বয়সেই রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের গান ও কবিতার সাথে আমার খুব ভাল পরিচয় হয়ে গিয়েছিল। এমনকি সত্যজিৎ রায়ের সিনেমার সাথেও সেই সূত্রে পরিচয়। তবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ছেলেপেলে বড় হয় টেলিভিশনে ককেশিয়ান অভিনেতাদের দেখতে দেখতে, ই.টি. এবং স্টার ওয়ারস এর মত সিনেমার সাথে পরিচয় ঘটে- আমার ক্ষেত্রেও এর ব্যতিক্রম ঘটেনি। একদিন আমার মা অমিতাভ বচ্চনের 'নমক হালাল' নামে একটা সিনেমা ভাড়া করে নিয়ে আসে। এটাই আমার দেখা প্রথম বচ্চন সিনেমা এবং এটা দেখেই আমার মধ্যে বড় ধরণের পরিবর্তন এসেছিল। তরুণ অমিতাভ বচ্চন, বড় পর্দায় এতো সুন্দর সুন্দর গান, সেই প্রথম বড় পর্দায় এমন শক্তিশালী কোন ভারতীয় চরিত্র দেখা। সেটা ছিল বিস্ময়কর, আমাকে আরও ভারতীয় সিনেমা দেখতে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিল। পরবর্তীতে অনেক ভারতীয় সিনেমা দেখেছি, যেমন সত্যজিৎ রায়ের অপু ত্রয়ী। এভাবেই আমার মাঝে সিনেমার অভিনেতা হওয়ার ইচ্ছা জেগে উঠে।ক্যারিয়ারের এই পর্যায়ে আমি স্পাইক লি-র মত পরিচালকদের সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি যিনি "ডু দ্য রাইট থিং" এর মত বিখ্যাত সিনেমা করেছেন। এটা আসলেই খুব বিস্ময়কর এবং অনেকটা একই রকম। ইন্ডাস্ট্রির কথা আসলে আপনি হয়তো বলিউড, টলিউড বা হলিউড বলবেন, কিন্তু আমি বরং বলিউডকে ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি এবং টলিউডকে বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি নামে ডাকব কারণ এগুলো ইনডাস্ট্রি হতে চায় ব্যাপারটা এমন না, এরা সবাই স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ ইন্ডাস্ট্রি। বলিউড তথা ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি তো অনেকদিন ধরে সিনেমা বানিয়ে আসছে। এমনকি এটা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি। অনেকদিন থেকেই এটা সর্ববৃহৎ ছিল কিন্তু সম্প্রতি আন্তর্জাতিক দর্শকদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে পারছে।তবে আমি আবারও বলছি, ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি, বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি এবং হলিউড অনেকটা একই রকম। আমি যেমন স্পাইক লি-র সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি যা আমার জন্য খুবই গর্বের বিষয়, তার করা "শি হেইট মি" সিনেমায় কাজ করেছি। তেমনি আবার অমিতাভ বচ্চনের সাথে কাজ করে ধন্য হয়েছি। বচ্চন ইয়াশ রাজ ফিল্মস এর ব্যানারে সিলসিলা করেছিলেন। সম্প্রতি ইয়াশ রাজ এর ব্যানারে হওয়া নিউ ইয়র্ক সিনেমায় আমি তার সাথে কাজ করতে পেরেছি। এটি আমার জন্য এক বিশাল উপহার ছিল এবং এর অংশ হতে পেরে আমি নিজেকে খুব ভাগ্যবান মনে করছি। আবার সম্প্রতি টলিউড তথা বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি তে কাজ করাটাও অন্যরকম অভিজ্ঞতা দিয়েছে। অনেক বছর ধরেই আমি সৌমিত্র চ্যাটার্জির গুণমুগ্ধ, 'অপুর সংসার' দেখার পর থেকেই। দ্বন্দ্ব সিনেমায় তিনি আছেন, বং কানেকশনেও ছিলেন।কিন্তু দ্বন্দ্বের অভিজ্ঞতা খুব মনে পড়ছে। এমনকি সিনেমাটা ডাব করার সময় আমি সৌমিত্র্য চ্যাটার্জির সাথেই ছিলাম ডাবিং রুমে। আসলে আমি ডাবিং রুম থেকে বের হচ্ছিলাম আর তিনি ঢুকছিলেন। সে ছিল আমার জন্য খুব স্মরণীয় একটা মুহূর্ত। আমাদের মধ্যে কিছুক্ষণ আলাপ হয়েছিল, তিনি সত্যজিৎ রায়ের 'অরণ্যের দিনরাত্রি' সিনেমার সেটে ঘটা কিছু মজার অভিজ্ঞতা বলেছিলেন আমায়।এই কাজগুলো করতে পারায় নিজেকে খুব ভাগ্যবান মনে হচ্ছে। তাছাড়া আমার অভিনয় ক্যারিয়ার আমাকে ভারত পুনরাবিষ্কারে সাহায্য করেছে, আমার বাবা-মা যেদেশ থেকে এসেছেন সেই দেশ পুনরাবিষ্কারে। আমি মেট্রো বা বাসে করে ঘুরতে পারছি এই দেশেরই একটি শহরে, সত্যজিৎ রায় যে স্থানগুলোতে শুটিং করেছিলেন সেগুলো নিজ চোখে দেখতে পারছি। আমার পূর্বপুরুষদের ভূমিতে ঘুরে ফিরতে পারছি। তাই এই তিনটি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রিতে কাজ করতে পেরেই আমি ধন্য। এবং সত্যি বলতে এই তিনটা ইন্ডাস্ট্রিই একই মৌলিক ভিত্তির উপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, যাদের গুণমুগ্ধ ছিলাম তাদের সাথে কাজ করতে গিয়ে আমাকে যে পথ ধরে এগুতে হয়েছে সবখানেই তা একই ছিল। এবং সকল ক্ষেত্রেই যাত্রাগুলো ছিল চমকপ্রদ।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা, এবার দ্বন্দ্বে ফিরে আসি। এখানে আপনার চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে বিবাহবহির্ভূত প্রেম এর সম্পর্ক ফুটিয়ে তুলতে হয়েছে। আপনার এই চরিত্রায়ন কি প্রাকৃতিকভাবেই এসেছে, নাকি নিজের মত করে নতুনভাবে চরিত্রটি তৈরি করেছেন?সম্রাট: (হাসি) আপনি জানেন যে অভিনেতা হিসেবে আমার দায়িত্ব হচ্ছে একটা গল্প সৎ, বিশ্বাসযোগ্য এবং আকর্ষণীয়ভাবে উপস্থাপন করা। আমি অনেক ধরণের চরিত্রে অভিনয় করেছি- ইন্টারোগেটর, প্রেমিক; আর অভিনেতা হিসেবে আমাদের দায়িত্বের একটা বড় অংশ হচ্ছে নিজের আইডিয়া চরিত্রের মধ্যে নিয়ে আসা, নিজেদের মত করে কিছু পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করা। কিন্তু একই সাথে এটা কল্পনা, সৃজনশীলতা এবং পারষ্পরিক সহযোগিতার অংশ যার সাহায্যে চরিত্রটা তৈরি হয়।বিপ্লব: চরিত্র রূপায়নে নিজের সৃজনশীলতা কাজে লাগানোর ক্ষেত্রে আপনি পরিচালক সুমনের কাছ থেকে কতটুকু স্বাধীনতা পেয়েছেন?সম্রাট: চরিত্রের মধ্যে নিজে থেকে কিছু যোগ করা, কিছু সৃষ্টি করা বা ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে অভিজ্ঞতাকে কাজে লাগানোর সুযোগ সুমন আমাকে দিয়েছে। আমাকে নিজের মত করে কিছু যোগ করতে দেয়ার ক্ষেত্রে সুমনের সুস্পষ্ট দূরদৃষ্টি এবং উদারতা ছিল বিস্ময়কর। আমি মাঝেমধ্যেই কোন একটা লাইন বা কোন একটা মুহূর্ত নিয়ে তাকে প্রশ্ন করতাম, সে উত্তর দিত ঠিকই কিন্তু আবার বলত যেন আমি নিজে নিজে বিষয়টা ভেবে দেখি, নিজের মত করে। সে আসলে সত্যিকার অর্থেই এমন একটা পরিবেশ তৈরি করেছিল যাতে কাজটা স্বচ্ছন্দে এগিয়ে যেতে পারে। তার সাথে কাজ করে খুব ভাল লেগেছে, অনেক স্বাধীনতা পেয়েছি; এমন দূরদৃষ্টিসম্পন্ন একজন পরিচালকের সাথে কাজ করতে পারা এবং সুন্দরী অনন্যা চ্যাটার্জির প্রেমিক চরিত্রে অভিনয় করা, সত্যিই অনেক বড় ব্যাপার।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা এবার অনন্যা চ্যাটার্জির প্রসঙ্গে আসি। তার সাথে কাজ করে কেমন লেগেছে? আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ডে আপনি তাকে কিভাবে মূল্যায়ন করবেন?সম্রাট: আমি মনে করি অনন্যা খুব শক্তিশালী এবং স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত একজন অভিনেত্রী। এখানে থেকে সে অনেক ভাল কাজ করতে পারবে। তার সাথে কাজ করে খুব ভাল লেগেছে এবং একই সাথে খুব মজাও পেয়েছি। কারণ সে খুব বিনয়ী, একইসাথে আবার খুব শক্তিশালী। চোখ দেখেই তার গভীর ব্যক্তিত্বের পরিচয় পাওয়া যায়। সে খুব স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত, স্বভাবসিদ্ধ অভিনেত্রীদের মতোই অভিনয় করতে তার খুব একটা শ্রম দিতে হয় না। স্বাধীন, আন্তর্জাতিক বা হলিউড সিনেমায় আমি অনেকের সাথেই অভিনয় করেছি। যেমন 'কিসিং কাজিনস' এ ব্রিটিশ অভিনেত্রী রেবেকা হেজলউড এর সাথে কাজ করেছি। এলিজাবেথ রিজার হলিউড সিনেমা ও টেলিভিশন ফিল্মের প্রতিষ্ঠিত অভিনেত্রী, 'দ্য ওয়েডিং উইকএন্ড' সে আমার কো-স্টার ছিল। সত্যি বলতে অনন্যা তাদের একেবারে সমমানের, মেধা এবং পেশাদারিত্ব সকল দিক দিয়েই।বিপ্লব: তা জেনে ভাল লাগল। কিন্তু একজন দক্ষিণ এশীয় হিসেবে হলিউডে কাজ করতে গিয়ে কি আপনার কোন অসুবিধা হয় না? কারণ আমার অভিজ্ঞতা বলে, ককেশিয়ান না হলে হলিউডে অভিনেতা হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়া খুব কষ্টকর। সুতরাং আপনি কি মনে করেন, বলিউড এবং এখন টলিউড যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে দক্ষিণ এশীয় অভিনেতাদের জন্য নতুন সুযোগ করে দিচ্ছে?সম্রাট: হ্যা, আমি মনে করি এটা ধীর প্রক্রিয়া, কিন্তু আমরা এগিয়ে যাচ্ছি। ভারতীয় ও বাংলা ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে দক্ষিণ এশীয় অভিনেতাদের জন্য নতুন দুয়ার খুলে দিচ্ছে। এবং আমি মনে করি দ্বন্দ্বের একই সাথে অ্যামাজন, নেটফ্লিক্স এবং ব্লকবাস্টারের মত সবগুলো চ্যানেলে একই দিনে মুক্তি পাওয়া একটি ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনা। এগিয়ে যেতে হলে এ ধরণের কাজ আরও করতে হবে।অ্যামেরিকায় আমি স্নাতক পর্যায় পর্যন্ত পড়াশোনা করেছি। শিক্ষকরা আমাকে অভিনয় করতে উৎসাহিত করে বলেছেন, ককেশিয়ান না হলেও কোন অসুবিধা নেই, অ্যামেরিকায় আন্তর্জাতিক পরিবেশ রয়েছে। তারপরও স্পষ্ট করে বলতে গেলে বলতে হয় ককেশিয়ান না হয়ে হলিউডে নাম করা বেশ কষ্টকর। প্রখ্যাত আফ্রিকান-অ্যামেরিকান অভিনেতা সিডনি পোয়াটিয়ে আজ থেকে ৫৫ বছর আগে অস্কার পেয়েছিলেন। তখন থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত আর কতজন আফ্রিকান-অ্যামেরিকান সেরা অভিনেতা হিসেবে অস্কার পেয়েছেন? যথেষ্ট নয়। আমি আশাকরি এই ইন্টারনেট সমাজে সবকিছুর গতি যেহেতু আগের চেয়ে বেশি সেহেতু ভারতীয়দের তেমন অবস্থায় আসতে আরও কম সময় লাগবে। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যজনক হলেও সত্যি যে আমরা বেশ ধীর গতিতে আগাচ্ছি। আসলে আমাদেরকে আরও সংঘটিত হতে হবে, নিজেদের সম্প্রদায়কে আরও সমর্থন জোগাতে হবে। বৈশ্বিক বাজারে উন্নতি করার একটাই উপায় আছে, পাইরেসি-র মত কাজগুলো পুরোপুরি বন্ধ করা। এটা আমি আরও একবার বলতে চাই। ডিভিডি-র ক্ষেত্রে আমাদেরকে অবশ্যই পাইরেসি বন্ধ করতে হবে।বিপ্লব: আচ্ছা আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ডে বাংলা সিনেমাকে আপনি কিভাবে মূল্যায়ন করেন এবং বাংলা সিনেমাকে বৈশ্বিক স্কেলে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য আপনার পরামর্শ কী?সম্রাট: একেবারে প্রথম থেকে শুরু করা যাক। সত্যজিৎ রায়ের সময়টাতে বাংলা সিনেমা যে শুধু আন্তর্জাতিক মানদণ্ড বজায় রেখেছে তাই নয় অনেক ক্ষেত্রে তাকে ছাড়িয়েও গেছে। এমনকি রায়ের "অপু ত্রয়ী" সেই সময়ই সব আন্তর্জাতিক চলচ্চিত্র উৎসবে পুরস্কার জিতেছে। আমি মনে করি, বর্তমানে তেমন পর্যায়ে পৌঁছানোর উপকরণ সবই আছে। কিন্তু আসল বিষয় হচ্ছে গল্প এবং নির্মাণ কৌশলের দিক দিয়ে উঁচু মান বজায় রাখা এবং সেটা ভালভাবে প্রকাশ করা।সুমন ঘোষের 'দ্বন্দ্ব'-এ নির্মাণ এর মান এবং গল্প খুবই সুন্দর। এতে রয়েছে বরুন মুখার্জির চমৎকার চিত্রগ্রহণ এবং ময়ূখ ভৌমিকের অনন্যসাধারণ সঙ্গীত যার সবই আন্তর্জাতিক মানের। তাই বলা যায় বাংলা সিনেমা আন্তর্জাতিক মানে পৌঁছানোর মত অবস্থায়ই রয়েছে, এখন কেবল দরকার চলচ্চিত্র সম্প্রদায়টিকে সমর্থন জোগানো। এবং আবারও বলছি, সেটা পাইরেসির মাধ্যমে নয়, সঠিক চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে করতে হবে।বৈশ্বিক ভারতীয় হিসেবে আমাদেরকে কম দামে পাইরেটেড ডিভিডি কেনা বা ভাড়া করা বন্ধ করতে হবে। কেউ যদি ডিভিডির মূল কপি না কিনে পাইরেটেড কপি কিনে তাহলে নির্মাতা অর্থ হারায়। আর যথেষ্ট আয় করতে না পারলে নির্মাতারা নতুন মানসম্পন্ন সিনেমা বানাতে পারেন না।বিপ্লব: আমি মনে করি বর্তমানে পাইরেসির চেয়ে ভয়ংকর জিনিস হচ্ছে টরেন্ট। কারণ বিট টরেন্টের মাধ্যমে অন্য কম্পিউটার থেকে খুব সহজেই যেকোন কিছু পাওয়া যায়।সম্রাট: ঠিক তাই। সুতরাং আমি মনে করি যদি আমরা সুমন ঘোষ, ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষ, অপর্ণা সেন এর মত চলচ্চিত্রকারদের সিনেমার মূল কপি কে সাপোর্ট করি তাহলে বাংলা বা ভারতীয় সিনেমা বৈশ্বিক মার্কেটে আরও এগিয়ে যেতে পারবে।বিপ্লব: আমার শেষ প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, আপনার ক্যারিয়ার পরিকল্পনা কী?সম্রাট: আমার ক্যারিয়ার পরিকল্পনা খুবই সরল। আমি অভিনেতা হিসেবে সিনেমার মাধ্যমে গল্প বলে যেতে চাই, বিশেষ করে এমন সব গল্প বলতে চাই যার সাথে বর্তমান সমাজের সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। তা সে হলিউড, ইন্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি বা বেংগলি ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রি যেখানেই হোক না কেন। আমার কাছে সিনেমা একটি সর্বজনীন ভাষা। এটা বাংলা বা হিন্দি বা এমনকি ইংরেজিরও উর্ধ্বে। একটি নির্বাক চলচ্চিত্রের মাধ্যমেও সবকিছু প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব। আমি অভিনেতা হিসেবে এভাবে গল্প বলে যেতে চাই তা সে এলএ, নিউ ইয়র্ক, বোম্বে বা কলকাতা যেখানেই হোক। রেডিও লিংকঃhttp://www.vnnbangla.com/newsreader.aspx?id=2568
